Abbot (and Chancellor of Scotland) Berbard and Robert the Bruce welcome international travellers to the town which proudly underlined Scotland's independence to the world in 1320 when the Declaration of Arbroath was signed and delivered to the Pope in Avignon. They are also of course reminding Scots of their duty come the independence referendum in Autumn 2014...

From 1726 it was believed that Abbot Bernard (Chancellor of Scotland) was the same individual as Bernard de Linton, a minister from the Borders. This was questioned in 1988, and as the earlier assumption is no longer thought true, references to 'de Linton' have been removed from this timeline...
